Submited By: Michael on 09/12/2010 I bought this detector as my introduction to the treasure hunting hobby. It is a perfect detector to start with. I couldn't afford to drop $250+ for a mediocre Bounty Hunter or an entry level Garrett. For the price vs. features you will not find anything close to this detector on the market. The ExplorerII does find coins at 6 inches, and sometimes a little deeper. I've found larger relics at over 18 inches. This means it performs exactly as advertised. After learning the detectors signals with practice I've come to realize the discriminator is incredibly accurate. Learn the "language" of this machine and it rewards you. If you get solid, consistent, repeatable tones indicating a coin it almost always is. If the target indicator jumps all over it's probably junk, and if the target indicator moves around but closely spaced within a coin/junk category it might be worth looking at. Pinpointing is a breeze with this thing even though it has no pinpoint mode. The center circle area of the coil has about a nickel sized area that sniffs out the signal return of the target. Sweep fast, then slow, then super slow and you can not only tell where the pinpoint for your plug should be, you can also get a pretty good idea on the target size as well. Reducing the sensitivity tells you pretty quick if you have a coin or something bigger. I hunted along side a veteran hunter with an expensive ($900+) Minelabs ExplorerII and I was finding the same targets at the same depth. Unbelievable value in this machine! I had to order the HP-1030 so I could search even deeper for coins, but these guys (American Hawks) build GREAT detectors, and don't let anyone tell you different!
